Acne The Essential Truths Which Everyone Should Know
For a great deal of time now acne has been the terror of both sexes during their teenage years, and, a topic not readily discussed. People who are plagued with acne have been aggressively tormented and reased, plus shockingly christened with nicknames such as zit face. Only those who have unfortunately suffered from the disease can sympathize how cruel and heartless such name throwing can really be. Over the last few decades exciting enigmas have been solved in the symptoms and causes of acne which have also aided the creation of effective acne treatments.
Acne is the name of an inflammatory skin disease often presenting itself in teenagers. It reveals itself by the production of excess sebum by the sebaceous glands which alarmingly become blocked. Acne can alter the processes in the follicles/pores in the skin on the chest, arms and back but also including the face. The blocked follicles and pores are medically known as comedo.
The comedone are the blockages in the pores which is a substance consisting of keratin and sebum. A comedo can be either open or closed. An open comedo is what we commonly refer to as a ‘blackhead’, and the closed comedo is what we commonly refer to as a ‘whitehead’.
Once a comedone has formed it is usually followed by the most unpleasant and noticeable symptom of acne – spots. First the comedone becomes infected and with this comes inflammation and redness of the skin, which then leads to an outbreak of pimples. The spots commonly become filled with pus and the skin surrounding the pimple looks very red and is sore to the touch.
There are 2 types of bacteria responsible for the inflammation and infection in acne, these are called Staphylococcus epidermidis and Propionibacterium acnes. As well as being responsible for the formation of pus filled pimples, acne abcesses and cysts can develop.
Acne treatments and cures: Our Scientists have made fantastic moves forward in the understanding of the processes involved in the formation of, and the control of, acne. Shockingly there has little or no increase in the comprehension of why acne develops. Overall, it is almost globally accepted that a collection of things, such as stress, diet and hormone levels can all act as acne triggers.
There are many scientists researching the possibility that our genetics may be a contibuting factor in initial development of acne. No matter what the causes of acne are, this ongoing research can only be of benefit in the long term, in both the treatment and understanding of acne. It is an unusual fact that, commonly, when a single scientific discovery is revealed it has a roll on effect upon other studies and often further important discoveries are made sometimes in an unrelated field of science.
