Why Do I Need A Dermatologist?

There are a lot of people out there that are unfamiliar with what a dermatologist is and what they do. A dermatologist is a doctor that specializes in hair, nails, and skin. Some of the things that a dermatologist will treat are things such as psoriasis, skin cancer, moles, melanomas, and skin tumors. Dermatologists have to be certified by The American Board of Dermatology.

Rigorous training is performed in the United States. Most dermatologists will go on to graduate from a medical or osteopathic school. If by chance you come across a dermatologist who graduates internationally, they must have a foreign graduate certificate. The minimal requirement outside of certification is at least 1 year in a residency program. This course includes emergency medicine, family practice, gynecology and obstetrics, pediatrics, general surgery or internal medicine. In the end they are considered medical specialists regarding the health of your skin.

Regular doctors usually recommend a dermatologist if regular antibiotics aren’t taking care of eczema, psoriasis or skin cancer. The point is, dermatologists are better suited to treat skin conditions, thanks to their special training. Common treatments include; dermabrasion or chemical peels, laser resurfacing, tissue augmentation, hair transplants, liposuction or sclerotherapy (to treat vascular malformations). One of the major benefits is the technology of today and how much it has furthered our success against skin conditions. This being said, a dermatologist will also manage skin disorders that come from different locations.

While the beginning training is enough to call them specialists, dermatologists continue their education. Some will utilize advanced training to gain other specialization titles so they can help you deal with infectious skin diseases, the immune system, and many other categories. In fact, you can even find some of these specialists in hospital settings. This is to help control the contagious skin infections that sometimes occur.

Then of course there are pediatric dermatologists. These specialists are specifically geared towards helping children who suffer from skin conditions. Two of the most common are eczema and normal skin allergies. Keep in mind, this group is usually part of a larger team, so all children with various complications can be treated properly.

Skin diseases or disorders are not uncommon for children; as a matter of fact there is high chance that your children will suffer from some type of condition that requires the service of a dermatologist. Skin disorders such as eczema, is a skin condition that affects a large portion of kids these days that typically stems from a type of allergic reaction, and a dermatologist the training to help you get rid of them. There are different severities of the condition, that will require different medication from the doctor, but they will be able to identify it and prescribe a topical or oral solution to get rid of it. Eczema is not something that is just found in children, most people develop it while they are children and some carry it over to there adulthood, so some dermatologist still continue to treat eczema in adults.

The most popular subject around dermatology is the issues with acne. Even though the local retail store products are the first things adolescents try to use, they usually end up at a dermatologist if things aren’t working. Whether its pimples, cysts, or even blotchy skin, a dermatologist will be able to handle this for you. While you might not want to hear this, some of the resolutions involve draining the pimples or cysts by using instruments that are only found in a dermatologist’s office. Then of course the prescriptions will also be present. The good news is they are utilized to overcome acne so you won’t have to worry about scarring. A good chemical peel or even laser surgery can correct the problem.

Now one thing that a lot of people suffer from that definitely requires a dermatologist is psoriasis. This is found in both adults and children, however it is most commonly found in adults. Psoriasis in most cases is very mild but there are some cases out there that are so severe, it has led to arthritis, and the loss of finger and toenails. So as you can see it can get very serious if left untreated but for the most part psoriasis is something that is mild and can be kept in control. There are some home remedies and over the counter medication that has been known to help psoriasis, if you have a more mild case of it.

Last but certainly not least, a dermatologist is also recommended for skin cancers, melanomas, moles, and skin tumors. These can all be severe issues, which is why a highly trained expert is needed. They will be able to recognize the symptoms, then diagnose it, treat it, and help you resolve the problem. One thing to remember is you may have to endure a few skin biopsies, excisions, or other special procedures to overcome your obstacle. So if they tell you about micrographic surgery, cryosurgery, or topical chemotherapy, at least you’ve heard of it before.

While many may think of a dermatologist as merely being an acne doctor for teenagers, a closer look at this specialized field of medicine reveals a lot more. As the skin is the largest organ on the body, a dermatologist plays a very important role in the medical profession as this specialist is called upon to treat a wide variety of common, rare and serious skin conditions and diseases.
